Gresy: sunglasses inspired by Audrey Hepburn

The column "The stars who inspired us" is back, after the article dedicated to James Bond, today we talk about Audrey Hepburn.

Gresy: sunglasses inspired by Audrey Hepburn

It is always hard to tell and write about icons like Audrey Hepburn. A movie star of undisputed elegance, who still represents today an inspirational model for thousands of girls looking for a flawless style, apparently simple but difficult to emulate. The ballet flats, the black turtleneck, the houndstooth trousers, the petite robe noire, the haircut, the cat-eye sunglasses... These were the essential elements of her image, on the big screen and in daily life. And exactly by that infamous sunglasses model, worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), we get inspired to design our female black sunglasses model, characterized by exclusively feminine shape: the Gresy.

Audrey Hepburn Sunglasses

In the film “Breakfast at Tiffany's” the sunglasses worn by Audrey Hepburn become a distinctive accessory for the characterization of her character. The main character, Holly Golilight, wears her sunglasses at night, pulls them down to the tip of her nose to show a surprising glance or a pouting muzzle. Together with Gresy Danilidis, a digital entrepreneur and a dear friend of TBD Eyewear, we created a sunglasses model inspired by Audrey Hepburn, with the purpose of representing a cheerful, carefree, and deeply self-conscious woman. We launched this new collection in 2019, and in just a few weeks it was sold out.
The Gresy is a vintage female sunglasses model, with a bold acetate frame, softly squared outlines and slightly thicker temples. The Gresy is inspired by the cat-eye sunglasses model for women, but with a modern interpretation and according to the typical TBD Eyewear style, characterized by a minimal design, harmoniously with the other men and unisex collections.

Colors and shades of the Gresy model

Together with Gresy Daniilidis, we selected three colors specifically thought for this collection, being overwhelmed by the memories of her homeland, Greece. All this is the result of a cultural background that goes back in time, made of colors, shades, and feelings that gave rise to three unique and glamorous models.

  • Gresy Chic Amber, squared women’s sunglasses, characterized by an amber-tortoise pattern, which reminds of the backcountry shades of the Greek islands. A timeless classic;
  • Gresy Midnight Black, black women’s sunglasses, in full Audrey Hepburn style. Its nuances call to mind the dark sand of the volcanic beaches in Santorini. For a mysterious and seductive style;
  • Gresy Pearl Ivory, white women's sunglasses, which come from the island of Milos and its cluster of white-colored fishermen's cottages. Bold and bright vintage glasses.

The Gresy: Handmade glasses, glasses made in Italy

The Gresy, like all models of the TBD Eyewear collections, meets production criteria that differentiate these sunglasses as a distinctive and refined accessory. In this model, like others, hinges are hand-fitted, glasses are smoothed in pumice-stone and wooden barrels, and then hand polished. Unlike our iconic models, in the Gresy model there are no screws in the end part of the frontal and in the temples, which conveys a simple and sophisticated look, exactly like the icon we took inspiration from. The Gresy of TBD Eyewear redesigns the classic vintage sunglasses in a contemporary twist, maintaining the timeless shapes.
